【1】Feeling “Foggy” About Your Career? Try This Simple Method to Clear Your Mind
Have you ever experienced that fuzzy, hard-to-explain feeling inside your head?
Sometimes, candidates share things like:
- “Honestly, I don’t even know what I really want to do.”
- “This job just doesn’t feel right anymore.”
- “But I have no idea where to start.”
If that sounds familiar, I often recommend a technique called Zero-Second Thinking.
【2】What Is Zero-Second Thinking?
It’s about turning the jumble of thoughts and feelings floating in your mind into clear words.
Our brains are often cluttered with vague ideas and emotions that come and go — like a fog. We sense something we want to express but can’t fully put into language. Zero-Second Thinking asks you to capture those fleeting thoughts immediately.
Here’s the key: Don’t just try to think it — write it down. Write whatever pops into your head, without censoring or hesitating. It could be hopes, frustrations, doubts — anything.
This idea comes from Yuji Akahane’s book Zero-Second Thinking, and it’s powerful. When you’re stuck in a cycle of repetitive thoughts, spending just one minute writing these things out can clear the fog and help you move forward.
【3】How to Get Started
All you need is:
- One sheet of A4 paper (recycled is fine!)
- A black ballpoint pen (I recommend PILOT Vcorn, but any pen works)
Steps:
- Place your paper horizontally.
- Write a simple title or question in the top left corner.
- For one minute, write in bullet points, as many 20–30 characters per line as you can. Just keep writing. Don’t pause or judge your thoughts.
- Repeat this exercise 10 times each day.
Think of it as a mental warm-up — simple, quick, and effective.
【4】Questions to Try Writing About
- Where do you want to be one year from now?
- What would make you truly satisfied a year from now?
- What kind of person do you want to be three years from now?
As you write, you might discover answers you didn’t realize were inside you. You may suddenly think, “Ah, so that’s what was really bothering me.”

【5】What Happens Next?
Your unclear feelings turn into clear words.
You begin to hear your own honest voice saying, “I knew this all along!”
Your focus shifts from superficial “job conditions” to what truly matters to you — your values.
At first, writing might feel awkward or challenging. But if you keep it up daily, you’ll start to find your own words and your own path.
【6】Before You Job Hunt, Organize Your ‘Self’ First
Instead of rushing to browse job listings, take a breath. Write down what really matters to you before you jump into action.
Doing so will help you define your criteria for choosing a company and thinking about your ideal work style — from a fresh, deeper perspective.
