When ChatGPT Played the Role of a Tough Interviewer: Preparing for Interviews with Solo Practice

Are You Practicing for Your Job Interviews?

“I’m not good at interviews.”
“I just can’t seem to come up with good answers…”

These are some of the concerns I hear most often.

I’ve shared question lists from past interviews, held mock interview sessions, and provided different kinds of support. But with everyone’s busy schedules—work, company research, family commitments—it can be tough to actually set aside time for practice. Before you know it, the interview date arrives and you haven’t practiced at all.

These days, anyone can use AI as a tool, and the way we prepare for interviews has changed dramatically. Enter your new study buddy: ChatGPT.

In fact, ChatGPT now supports voice conversations. That means you can have realistic mock interviews on your own, as many times as you need, with:

  • No one watching you
  • Practice at your own pace
  • Unlimited opportunities for do-overs

Honestly, there’s no reason not to give it a try.

Let ChatGPT Be Your Interviewer

You can even ask ChatGPT to act as different types of interviewers, such as:

  • The strict or harsh interviewer (uses pressure tactics)
  • The nitpicky interviewer (asks detailed follow-up questions)
  • The whimsical interviewer (asks random questions)
  • The ultra-logical interviewer (points out inconsistencies in your answers)

Here’s how a conversation might go:

ChatGPT: Hello. How are you today?
You: I’d like to practice for an interview—can you help me?
ChatGPT: Absolutely. What type of job and company is this for?
You: It’s for [position] at [company]. Can you act as a rather strict interviewer?
ChatGPT: Understood. Then, let’s begin with a self-introduction.
…and your mock interview goes from there!

Because it really feels like a real conversation, you’ll start to notice all kinds of little habits you didn’t realize you had. (Trust me, I know from experience!)

Using Your Voice Makes It Even More Realistic

When you use ChatGPT’s voice features and actually say your answers aloud, you’ll notice things like:

  • Repetitive language habits (always ending your answers the same way, etc.)
  • A tendency to use vague expressions
  • Verbal fillers like “um,” “well,” and “kind of” standing out

Nobody points these things out to you in a real interview, so being able to spot them yourself is a huge advantage.

How to Practice (It’s Simple!):

  1. Tell ChatGPT: “Please be my interviewer.”
  2. Prepare your motivation for applying and a self-introduction.
  3. Use voice chat for Q&A practice.
  4. Ask ChatGPT to review your answers and suggest improvements.
  5. Try again and watch your answers improve each time!

As you get used to it, your responses will become more and more polished.

In Interviews, Preparation Wins!

When it comes to interviews, it’s not about who speaks best—it’s about who’s prepared thoroughly and naturally.

ChatGPT can:

  • Play the role of a strict questioner
  • Point out inconsistencies in your answers
  • Practice with you as often as you need

It’s a practice partner that’s always available, no matter your schedule.

Bonus: Try prompting ChatGPT like this

“You’re now a tough interviewer. Please ask me challenging questions about my self-introduction and motivation for applying. I’ll start with my introduction.”

That’s all it takes to get your interview practice started.

Honestly, once you try ‘mock interviews with ChatGPT,’ you might find it surprisingly fun and addictive!
